Camp Pendleton’s Base Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team and local communities took third place during the bon suit relay race as part of the third annual EOD Warrior 5K run in San Diego, May 25. The event was open to the public and was used to raise money for fallen and wounded EOD service members.

The event was hosted by Camp Pendleton and Iwo Jima Monument West. Nine veterans of the Battle of Iwo Jima were in attendance to recount their tales of the historic battle, the raising of the flag atop Mount Suribachi and the days that followed.

In 2014, MCAS Miramar had the greatest percentage reduction in energy use nationally and cut its fuel oil consumption by 98%.

LAE, Papua New Guinea (May 11, 2105) - Participants discuss the best options in responding to a mock disaster during a working group at the Oceania Pacific Resilience Disaster Response Exercise and Exchange (DREE) held. The DREE is a five-day exercise, hosted by the Papua New Guinea Defense Force, that will consist of presentations and discussions from subject matter experts, a tabletop exercise, a field training exercise and an after action review.

Aviation and ground units from Camp Pendleton, 3rd MAW, Navy Region Southwest, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, and the San Diego Sheriff’s Department participated in the annual exercise, which provides ready, trained and certified military and civilian resources to combat wild land fires in the region.

Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez, House Armed Services Committee, Ranking Member of the Tactical Air and Land Forces Subcommittee, visited Camp Pendleton to learn about base funding, readiness and facilities issues, April 27. Congresswoman Sanchez ate lunch with female Marines and Sailors at the 21 Area Chow Hall before meeting with Marine Corps Installations West Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton leadership for a facilities brief.

The Honorable McGinn chaired the conference, which covered energy opportunities and solutions, energy and utilities infrastructures, alternative fuel sources and vehicles, state energy legislations, and coverage of the California drought and desalination throughout the course of the conference.

Reconnaissance Training Company Marines received an aerial view of Camp Pendleton during Special Patrol Insertion/Extraction training at San Mateo Landing Zone, April 17. The Marines, students of the Basic Reconnaissance Course, took turns being hoisted into the air by helicopter during the SPIE portion of their Helicopter Rope Suspension Training. During the course of HRST the students learn SPIE rigging, rappelling and fast rope techniques.

Camp Pendleton held the 2015 Heartbreak Ridge Run, April 11. The event is an off-road running race held in the northwestern foothills of the base. It is comprised of a half marathon, and 10 km, five km and one km races.
MV-22B Ospreys with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 163 conduct a training flight from Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California, April 10. This training operation marks the last time the commanding officer of VMM-163 will participate in a squadron-sized event before relinquishing command.
Congressman Jason Chaffetz, Chairman of the House Oversight Government and Reform Committee, was escorted by members of MCIWEST MCB-CAMPEN Government and External Affairs on a tour of training facilities and tenant commands aboard Camp Pendleton, April 6. The day concluded with a tour of the Infantry Immersion Trainer, a hands-on, mixed reality training facility that simulates the sights, smells, sounds and feel of village, in designated locations. The purpose of the facility is to provide a realistic environment in which to train Marines for deployment.
