U.S. Marine Staff Sgt. Freddy Torres, a native of Tucson, Arizona, speaks about his experiences as the chief instructor for multiple professional military education courses for Headquarters and Support Battalion, Marine Corps Installations West, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, on Camp Pendleton, Sept. 26, 2019. Torres joined the Marine Corps in 2006 as in infantryman. Before serving with H&S Bn., he served with 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, and 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st MARDIV. What Martin Luther King Day means to me
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is an American federal holiday that is observed annually on the third Monday of January to celebrate the legacy of Dr. King on Jan. 15th. Dr. King is recognized for being the head spokesperson for nonviolent activism during the American civil rights movement. Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton observes this holiday annually in recognition of Dr. King and his ideals of freedom and equality for all, a standard that Marines and fellow service members uphold. Flashback: Desert Shield- Desert Storm
On this day in history, Jan. 16, 1991, President George H. W. Bush ordered an attack on enemy forces in Iraq and Kuwait. The order signified the end of Operation Desert Shield and the beginning of Operation Desert Storm when American troops, as part of an international coalition, began an extensive aerial bombing campaign to end Iraq’s occupation of Kuwait.
