Giovanni Brunacini, a rifleman with Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, who is currently serving as a block noncommissioned officer with Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton's marksmanship training division, recounts saving the life of a man wounded in a drive-by shooting while visiting a friend, Dec. 13, 2021. Brunacini was outside a coffee shop in Lemon Grove, California, Nov. 17, when he heard gunfire nearby. The School of Infantry-West honored infantry Medal of Honor recipients during a dedication ceremony at the Advanced Infantry Training Battalion, July 14. The ceremony was held to dedicate a classroom, now called the Hall of Heroes, to the Medal of Honor recipients of the past and present. Colonel Robert J. Operation Hero is a 10-week after school tutoring and mentoring program for Kindergarten and elementary students in all five schools on Base who are experiencing feelings of self-doubt or suffer from low self-esteem. This free program facilitates a positive environment, encourages responsible behavior and gets military children back on track academically and socially.
