Firefighters with the Camp Pendleton Fire Department (CPFD) were called to assist with the Mendocino Complex Fire in Mendocino County, California, from July 27 to Aug. 21. 2018. Regional firefighters began refreshing Camp Pendleton's 164 miles of firebreaks designed to control fires on the installation year-round. The fire breaks, created and maintained with bull dozers and road graders are essential to mitigating property damage and loss of life on and off base. (U.S. Marine Corps video by Cpl. Chief John Crook, Camp Pendleton Fire Department deputy chief, speaks on Marine Corps Installations-West, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton's concept of preparedness, response and effort in the event of a wildfire on base or its surrounding communities. Each year, Camp Pendleton conducts several training events to remain prepared in the event of a wildfire or if requested to support fire fighting efforts off the installation.
